We lived in Perth, Western Australia for about a year, then moved to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea (to the north of Australia). After a further year we moved to Rabaul, the capital of the island of New Britain which lies to the north east of Papua New Guinea.
In 1973 we returned to the UK and found ourselves living in Bolsover in Derbyshire where I went first to the New Bolsover Junior and Infants School and then, in 1977, to The Bolsover School. The latter was, at that time, split over three sites. One near the centre of Bolsover and another off New Station Road (where I went) each catered for 1st and 2nd years with 3rd year and up all being at the main site on Mooracre Lane. Please don't ask me how the old `year' system relates to the American `grade' system we seem to be adopting at schools over here now. The last time I drove down New Station Road I noticed that the part of the school there had been completely demolished, which was sad.
I stayed on to the 6th form to study for A-levels (I have no idea if the school still has a 6th form - there were regular rumours when I was there of it being closed and everyone having to go to one of the local 6th form colleges). After that I went to Keble College, Oxford University. After my degree, I joined the Computing Lab to do a one year MSc after which I obtained a job there running their undergrad computing facilities (a network of Sun UNIX systems, though, again, I have no idea what the facilities are now).
After over 7 years of that, I decided it was time to step into the real world. I moved to London and spent two years working for John Brown, part of the Trafalgar House Group (later to be Kvaerner after being taken over). I then became a contractor and worked for News International for a year (for which I appologise!) and then BT Syncordia Solutions, though they have recently changed their name to Ignite Solutions (it seems to be the trendy thing to do, I suppose). After leaving BT I joined SITA (the airline industry people, not the waste disposal people) as a "permie" and now I am with Ocado.
When I was at University, I got into bikes which suprised me. And quite a few others, too! You can read more about that elsewhere (if I've gotten round to writing it all up, that is!).
More recently, I have discovered the joys of flying. It really is something else to be able to go round to your local airfield, book a plane and go flying. I have put details of how I got my PPL and some stuff about trips I've done since on my flying pages.
