Seychelles, June 2000

The Seychelles was fantastic! It was lovely and warm (thought it did get a bit too hot for me sometimes, but I usually stick to the shade anyway). The main thing we noticed was that everything is soooo expensive over there.

We were also suprised at how mountainous the island was for such a small place. It produces some spectacular views on the day we hired a mini moke for a drive around.

A view of Mount Kenya from the plane at Nairobi. The turn-around was 3 hours and they didn't let us off!
Approaching Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles.
A police station in one of the villages, showing the ever present mountains in the background.
The Seychelles is famous for giant tortoises (one of only about 2 or 3 places where they are found). Unfortunately, you only ever seem to come across them in pens like this one.
Another view of them.
We stumbled across a sign pointing to a waterfall. After driving along a very narrow track, then climbing up a hill we came to a house where we dutifully paid out 10p to pass the other side and on to the waterfall.
The house had pens with all sorts of animals in them including bats and, you guessed it, giant tortoises.
A lane of Sandragon trees lead to the site of the old hillside mission. There is now a viewing shelter there which was opened by the Queen.
The view from the viewing shelter.
Every hundred yards or so there is another beach. They are all covered with pure white sand and there is hardly ever anyone else about. It is easy to find yourself your own beach for the day. Bliss!
Another beach all to ourseleves.
Beau Vallon Bay Beach where our hotel was located.
The requisite pen of tortoises next door to the hotel.
They seem to live a very sad life.
Me trying my best to make my version of the breast stroke look easy.
Most of our time was spent in or by the side of the pool.
Simon joined in with the water volleyball, but it looked far too energetic for me!
Simon playing hard in the water...
...and then resting hard in the sun.
A final view of the hotel with the mountains in the background.
