Visiting Les   Heroes Square

After a relaxingly late start and a bit of a wander round a few places in town, we had lunch, then went for a walk up Gellért Hill. This was a strenuous climb involving lots of walking and pretty much set the pace for the rest of the weekend.

These were opposite the Astoria Hotel (at the corner of Rákóczi út and Múzeum körút)!
The Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum) on Múzeum körút.
Les on Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) with Gellért hill on the left with the Liberation Memorial prominent at the top with Elizabeth Bridge (Erzsébet híd) in the background and the Castle Palace (Budavári palota).
Gellért Hill showing the strange cave church and the Liberation Memorial at the top.
Gellért Hotel.
Gellért Hotel with the Danube (Duna) in the background. That's me in the foreground!
Part way up the hill looking back to Liberty Bridge.
One of the towers of Liberty Bridge with trams crossing.
Looking the other way to Elizabeth Bridge. Part of Chains Bridge (Széchenyi lánchid) is visible. You can also see the red dome of the Parliament (Országház) and to the right, the skyline is dominated by St. Stephen's Cathedral (Szent István bazilika).
Les and me with the Danube and city behind.
Looking up the river, you can clearly see Chains Bridge and Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) with Margaret Island (Margit-sziget).
Elizabeth Bridge with Március Square (Március tér) and Belvárosi Church (Belvárosi templom).
The Liberation Memorial (Szabadság). This used to be a communist monument and you can see where the Russian star was removed from near the top after the country freed itself from communist rule in 1989.
The words read:
MINDAZOK EMLÉKÉRE
AKIK
ÉLETÜKET ÁLDOZTÁK
MAGYARORSZÁG
FÜGGETLENSÉGÉÉRT.
SZABADSÁGÁÉRT
ÉS BOLDOGULÁSÁÉRT

which translates roughly as:
ALL THOSE WHO REMEMBER
THE SACRIFICES OF LIFE
FOR HUNGARIAN
INDEPENDANCE.
FOR LIBERTY
AND PROSPERITY
A statue at the base of the memorial.
Another view of this statue.
A wall of the Citadel (Citadella) showing gunfire damage from WWII.
The view across the river on the journey down the other side.
The Castle seen from the Citadel.
That's me, that is, with Chains Bridge, Margaret Bridge and Margaret Island in the background.
Les at the St Gellért statue.
Me again, on the steps leading down from St Gellért. You can just make out part of the Castle at the top left.

In the afternoon, Les showed me this hologram shop. There were some large images in the windows. Here a shark...
...and here a scary spider!
