Flight Plan

I had thought that this was going to be an ambitious task spotting these horses as it would mean navigation would have to be pretty spot on.

As it was, visibility was excellent and the horses were easily visible from at least 3nm away. Except for the one at Marlborough. I remembered that once when I was at college going for a drive with my sisters around the area that this one had been hard to find from the road, but we had managed it in the end. From the air, we just couldn't spot it at all.

The others were very easy to find and looked very strange away from anywhere all on their own.

The main disappointment was the windfarm. As I approached the location, we were looking for windmills and I eventually spotted one. Yes, just one lonely windmill. Hardly what I would call a farm!

Greenham Common looked a complete mess. The runway has been removed and what look like 3 large bunkers filled in with sand. It is a bit of an eyesore from the air.

Although I was listening to various places en-route I didn't bother talking to anyone as I didn't enter any airspace until approaching the Oxford AIAA when I dialed up Brize Norton and received an excellent service from them. Although I had asked for RIS, they were only able to offer a FIS, but it was easily as good as any RIS I've had from anywhere in the past!

Highlight, I guess, was spotting my first crop circles. Two in fields by Avebury of fairly intricate design. There were also a couple that looked like aborted attempts that hadn't gone as planned.

Piccies of the flight all taken by Matt (selecting them produces a full sized version, as usual):

Flight planning at The Pilot Centre, Denham.
"Clear prop!"
As you can see, there are some nice properties around Denham (this is during the climbout of runway 24).
Crossing the M25 just before turning crosswind.
Henley-on-Thames
Newbury race course with Newbury itself in the background.
Horse near Pewsey (horse 1). That's it over there on the side of the hill. I didn't go too near as this is right in the edge of danger area D126.
Horse 2.
Horse 3 just north of Devizes.
A crop circle just east of Avebury.
Avebury. The ring where the stones were placed is clearly visible here. Not many of them are left, but you can see a few around the bottom-left of the circle. Another crop circle is seen in the foreground and also outside the top-right of the stone circle.
Horse 5 at Uffington. The depression to the right of the horse shows where a hill fort once stood.
The road going across from the bottom left here is the A34. This is taken from above Didcot. Milton Heights (where Matt used to live) is nestled up against the A34 near the junction there. The railway is heading off towards Swindon.
Looking down at Didcot power station.
Oxford United's ground.
The Thames (or Isis when in Oxford!). Some of the University's boathouses are visible just before the river leaves the left of the image. The city centre is off the top left.
A closer view of the boathouses.
Oxford centre. Christ Church college is fairly prominent to the right of the centre and left and up from there is the Radcliffe Camera.
looking back from north of where St. Giles branches into Banbury and Woodstock roads. The University Parks are at the bottom left.
A great view over the centre. The High Street is running up the right hand side with Broad Street up from the middle of the bottom edge. How many colleges can you spot?
Another view over St. Giles. You can see Gloucester Green and the cinema towards the bottom right.
Refuelling after a very enjoyable trip.
