The weather the next day was fantastic with pretty much no wind which was going to make navigation a doddle. Well, navigation was the least of my concerns as the visual references are so clear you'd have a job getting lost!

Here's a selection of piccies which show how wonderful the scenery is:

The dam on Lake Merwin about half way between Portland and Mt. St. Helens.
I think this is the dam on Yale Lake (which feeds into Merwin).
About 10 miles from the summit. We are flying at about 4500ft over the lakes here.
We skirted round the south side about 7 miles or so away climbing to 7500ft ready for the high area to the East and North of the volcano.
The lines which look at first like scratches in this image are actually trees. They still lie where the blast felled them back in 1980 showing the direction of the blast.
North-east of the summit we get a clear view of Spirit Lake and the missing side of Mt. St. Helens where the main erruption took place.
Longview on the Columbia River. Portland is just off the top right corner somewhere.
Gales Creek just to the North-west of Forest Grove, itself just West of Hillsboro. This is where my passengers live.
Turning final for runway 30 at Hillsboro.
Almost at the threshold.
Aiming for those numbers!
A smooth landing.
Taxying behind a learjet back to the flight school.
